Hot Tips For Choosing Website Domain Names

The domain name is the most important aspect of being online. A website is only half the issue, people need the address if they are going to visit. Choosing a domain name gets more difficult each day. As more businesses wake up to the possibilities the internet offers, more websites are being built and taking up a potentially valuable domain name in the process.
If you’re planning to have a business website, you should begin thinking of a domain name right away. The longer you wait, the harder time you will have coming up with one That will prevent anyone else profiting from your hard work.
The most common names will include a Top Level Domain (TLD) suffix. That’s .com .org .net to the rest of us. Whatever name you choose, you should register all of those with it. That will prevent anyone else profiting from your hard work.

If only a single TLD is available it’s worth thinking of another name. The same or similar domain names with different suffixes can cause confusion with surfers, so it’s wise to steer clear. Only buy a name with a single TLD available if you really like it.

Keep the name as short as possible. It will be easier to remember, easier to type and better all round. Internet users can be a lazy lot sometimes, make it easy for them.

Think carefully about where you plan to be in a few years’ time. Difficult I know, but useful when choosing a name for your website. Being very specific may cause you to have to buy another name. For example if you called yourself “KamisnkyRecords.com” then changed to selling comic books or perfumes, you’re going to need a new name. One option is to buy a company domain name, then specific ones for your ventures. It means buying more than one, but then each is relevant to the niche it serves.

Some marketers suggest using keywords in a domain name. we wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. Keywords are for later as far as we’re concerned. There is enough work for them to do once the site is up and running, we don’t need them in the name.

A domain name should reflect the website, your company and what it stands for. That way it can work as part of your overall brand. It needs to be quality, and reflect the standards your business reflects. For example “PrintRiteQuik.com” may sum up exactly what the business does, but is sounds cheap and low-rent. Chances are, the only clients you would get with a name like that are low-rent too.

Avoid hyphens where you can. Websites with hyphenated domain names often have a hard time getting decent traffic as it’s a pain to type. It’s just out of reach of the standard typing position and awkward to say out loud. Unless you really want the name, avoid them.

Choosing a domain name can take longer than building the website itself. The name not only has to reflect who you are now, but also who you want to be in a couple of years’ time. That’s the hard part.
